It’s not normal where I live to have a 50 degree sunny day this late in the year. When snow and ice are gone, motorcyclist hit the streets to take advantage of a rare winter siesta. Today I decided to take my Urban Commando Route and check out what the metropolis had to offer. It’s good to get out of the rural areas and get an appreciation of city life. I normally reserve these days for early morning weekend runs, in hopes of missing traffic. I grew up in a very rural setting and now live in the burbs and lack experience with riding in the city.
The ride was splendid. Not much traffic and plenty of sun to warm the body in the cool November air. It’s fun to dart past the cars and busses as one traverses the metro streets. There is a lot of items to track and be aware of compared to navigating dairy farms where I live. There is so much to observe and ultimately, that is what got me into trouble. As I was driving down the road, I was paying attention to pedestrians on the river walk and did not see the stop light until I was just about under it and heading into the intersection. To my dismay the light was red and there was no way I could avoid the intersection. My first thought was panic. If there were cars coming from left or the right, I was a dead man. Luck was my passenger because there were no cars in either directions. I was lucky and stupid all at the same time.
I am always talking about the danger brought forth by others but realized this morning that I was my worst enemy. Lesson learned without anyone getting hurt but I am still pretty angry at myself.
Over confidence breeds trouble. I think I fell into this trap today and it was almost a costly lesson. It reminds me of what Jerry Garcia sang in one of my favorite songs, “Cause when life looks like easy
Street, there is danger at your door.”
Be safe and ride well………….

We all make mistakes! Urban areas are tough and have almost too much to pay 100% attention. I’ve tried to come up with songs and little ditties in my head like “green, green, as green as go…”, meaning if I don’t see a green light, I don’t go… I have others, I know, it’s silly. (-:

What ever works! I guess the important thing is to understand our limitations and never become overconfident. In my youth I had a hard head but in my declining years, I am more open to learn! You should write a post about your songs!!!

Oh my gosh!! This reminds me of my very recent brush with a very bad outcome while riding through an intersection (although I didn’t run a red, I progressed through on a yellow light and got hit). So glad you are okay!!

I was definitely lucky and hope I don’t run any more Red Lights.

A Hayabusa rider; Why am I not surprised?

Previous comment regarding the picture you posted. I’ll bet Google is full of similar amusing pics. Glad you’re alright! Over confidence and sightseeing has gotten me in some jams, too. Live and learn, and thank your guardian angel. I’d say watch the road, but some sightseeing is a must, right? Stay safe!

I saw the photo attached above with the guy riding a Hayabusa with Roller-blades and was like “I thought I was crazy for riding with my snowshoes”……

The one big downside of riding is that sometimes it’s hard to take in the world around you. Especially in high traffic areas. Glad you’re ok.

Yup, distractions for me has always been an issue even off the cycle.

In an urban area, a motorcyclist is but a speck on someone else’s windshield. Glad you didn’t get squished!

Just a week or so ago I was riding a 1996 Suzuki Savage LS650 and when crossing into the intersection a car from the other direction started a left turn right in front of me. Do not ask me how I did it, because I surprised myself an haven’t a clue how I pulled it off. As the car turned left in front of me I grabbed the brakes, I down shifted and slid my bike sideways so my path was parallel to the opposing car in the opposite direction passing him on his right and then hooked a quick right returning to my original path. I felt my leg touch the car very briefly during this and the reality of how close I actually was to becoming a statistic made me a believer in paying attention to my surroundings. It is a beautiful and exciting road full of danger for two wheelers. ( Okay, I almost had to return home for a change of undershorts, but I didn’t drop her and I survived ) I think my future goal is to not ever find myself in that situation again.
